The Graduate English Teaching Division within the School of International Studies is comprised of a dynamic, cohesive, and dedicated faculty. It is primarily responsible for teaching English and conducting research for graduate students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in non-English disciplines at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). The Division’s 13 faculty members include one Longjiang Scholar, one National Teaching Award recipient, four professors (one tenured), eight associate professors, and one lecturer. Notably, over 92% hold senior or intermediate academic titles. Seven faculty members (53.8%) hold doctoral degrees in English, and all have international experience through teaching, studying, or conducting research abroad.

The Division has earned significant recognition for its teaching excellence, including two National Teaching Achievement Awards and numerous provincial, ministerial, and university-level awards. It has developed six Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), with three designated as National First-Class Courses and five as Provincial First-Class Courses. Faculty members are celebrated for their extensive experience and outstanding instruction, having received multiple national, provincial, and institutional awards for teaching excellence.

The Division is also active in research. In recent years, faculty have completed numerous national, provincial, and university-level projects, published over ten articles in SSCI, CSSCI, and other national core journals, and authored or co-authored dozens of academic monographs and textbooks.

Guided by a student-centered philosophy that prioritizes holistic development, the Division’s fundamental mission is to integrate moral education with intellectual growth. It places a strong emphasis on fostering students’ comprehensive competencies. Its curriculum features an integrated master’s-doctoral approach designed to cultivate English communication proficiency while enhancing students’ cultural and intellectual literacy. To meet diverse learning needs, the Division offers a range of credit-bearing English courses for both master’s and doctoral students.

Employing a student-centered, blended-learning model that integrates in-class and out-of-class activities, the Division effectively stimulates students’ interest and potential. This pedagogical model facilitates a shift from knowledge acquisition to competency development, preparing graduate students to engage on the global stage of academic exchange. Through its focus on personalized, diverse, and internationalized education, the Division provides a robust platform for language practice and makes a significant contribution to HIT’s mission of building a world-class university and cultivating high-caliber, innovative talent.
